What inspired you to start creating music?

I was surrounded by music that made me feel something as a kid / young teenager. I always had other people’s music to reflect back on until I decided to do that for myself. I had a rough life growing up, which then led me to write what I was feeling. Combining singing and what I was writing and suddenly I had lyrics in front of me that meant something to me. It always felt right, and I always knew it was what I was meant to do. I have not stopped since.
Talking about the elephant in the room will allow more young creators who are coming up with me to feel comfortable and safe in spaces they aren’t used to being in or creating in.

At what point did you feel comfortable calling yourself an artist?

I would definitely say that I own being an artist. I struggled for many years, but I’m still learning that I am my number one fan. I have to root for myself even when no one else does. I have to believe that I am anything I set myself out to be, and if I can’t own saying that then it will only become harder for me to take myself further in my career.

How has the process of collaboration (finding producers, other musicians, etc) been for you as a young woman of color?

It has been a weird experience. I’ve been in studios with men all who are primarily white and it almost always feels like I have to prove myself to them. Not only because I am a woman, but a woman of color and maybe they have this idea of the kind of woman that I am. I am someone who tolerates zero crap, so when I walk into a room to work and set that intention it comes as a surprise sometimes that I’m able to assert myself in a way that is professional and honest to my craft. Overall, there is still room for better experiences as a young singer/songwriter, but talking about the elephant in the room will allow more young creators who are coming up with me to feel comfortable and safe in spaces they aren’t used to being in or creating in.

What have you learned about yourself in this past year? How have you changed?

I learned that I have to be nicer to myself…allow myself to feel pain and hurt in a way that is healthy and not self-sabotaging. I changed how I approach and dissect the problems that arise in my life, and choose what’s right for me above everything.

Give us all the details about any your upcoming music: do you have any new singles coming out? Can we expect an EP at some point?

I recently released my first single “Flor”, now available on all streaming platforms. If you like alternative R&B then you might like my song (I hope!). I am working on more music, looking to release real soon. You can follow my Instagram or subscribe to my website for more updates!
