How have the last 1.5 years been for you and your business?

It certainly hasn’t been easy. In December 2020, I decided to leave my full-time job at the Innocence Project to pursue @shopberriez in the middle of a pandemic (!!). I remember asking my mom, “Am I crazy for doing this?“ but she advised me to take the risk.
Who knew running a business could be so hard (especially in the midst of a global pandemic)?! I went from having one job to having 20 jobs, since apparently you have to learn every. single. job. to run a business.
Emma

Well, the joke’s on me. Who knew running a business could be so hard (especially in the midst of a global pandemic)?! I went from having one job to having 20 jobs, since apparently you have to learn every. single. job. to run a business. I’m an accountant now, never thought I’d say that!

Luckily, I had the support of my family, friends, and the amazing @shopberriez community that kept me positive and motivated. It takes a village, and I couldn’t have done it without them.

How have you made friends and built a community in NYC?

Instagram is both an amazing and exhausting platform. I have met and continue to meet so many amazing people through @shopberriez Instagram. Before the pandemic, I would meet lots of people at popups or on big shoots. These days, though, it’s been all about Instagram!

I’m excited to hopefully host more @shopberriez events in the future. I love meeting people I chat with on Instagram in real life. What always surprises me at popups is how many kindred spirits there are in the @shopberriez community – people just like me, who have IBS, anxiety, and use clothing as a coping mechanism. It’s so special.

What was it like moving from #sidehustle to full-time with your own vintage line, Berriez?

It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done - and still is. I thought I’d have more free time, since I’d only be working one job; however, it’s been quite the opposite! I really want @shopberriez to succeed, so I’ve been working nonstop to make it all happen.

I’m now realizing I also have to prioritize my own self-care, in addition to running the biz. Because that’s just as important: how can I run a biz if I don’t feel good about myself or don’t feel well rested? I’m learning as I go.

What’s a business or brand in NYC you want to shout out?

@shopberriez !

I’d also like to shout out @Abacaxi, another colorful clothing brand that inspires me endlessly. The owner is brilliant, her designs are innovative, and the brand itself is so cool.

What’s a trend you want to see resurrected?

Novelty sweaters á la Michael Simon. I’m working on it!!!
