Alex Gehring - AUSTIN, TX
How would you describe your morning routine?
I wake up at 9:15 and drag myself and my cats out of bed so that I can be out of my house by 9:45 and posted at my favorite coffee shop, Figure 8, for about 30 minutes before I head to work.
How long does it take you to get ready?
Typically about 30 minutes in the morning. I try to figure out what I'm going to wear the night before because I have too much clothing! It's overwhelming. Coffee is a major motivation to get moving.
What is the one thing in your morning you can't do without?
If I say coffee am I being too repetitive? I'm beginning to think I have a problem....
What does getting ready look like for you?
Well, I'm typically buried under several cats and my boyfriend's arm, so just digging my way out of bed can be a workout. After I've worked out, I do a quick double-check in the mirror to make sure that I don't look too insane. Then I brush my teeth, put some makeup on, get dressed and hope the outfit I picked out the night before wasn't chosen while I was drunk....And then I stumble out the door. When I'm on tour getting ready looks like me scraping myself off whatever floor I was allowed to sleep on, fighting three boys for shower rights and climbing immediately into the back of our van. It's so glamorous!
Do you plan out your outfits the night before or are you more of a spontaneous morning dresser?
I try my best to plan them out, but I usually improvise a little in the moment too. Sometimes an outfit you picked out just doesn't feel right or you're having one of those days where you hate everything you put on and you just end up wearing some form of publicly acceptable pajamas. I probably wear about 30 % of the clothing I own and my favorite jeans probably every other day. I have so much stuff I never wear, but I just can't bring myself to get rid of it. I'm like, "Maybe I'll need this ball gown one day!" I used to be scared that I might be a hoarder, but now I prefer the term "collector."
If you had 15 more minutes in the morning, what would you squeeze in?
Fifteen more minutes of sleep, snuggled up with my boyfriend and cats. Spending so much time living out of a van and sleeping on floors makes you really appreciate those moments. And, it makes you really appreciate beds.
